Observed changes in stratospheric circulation: decreasing lifetime of N2O, 2005–2021

چکیده

Abstract. Using Aura Microwave Limb Sounder satellite observations of stratospheric nitrous oxide (N2O), ozone, and temperature from 2005 through 2021, we calculate the atmospheric lifetime N2O to be decreasing at a rate −2.1 ± 1.2 %/decade. This decrease is occurring because abundances in middle tropical stratosphere, where photochemically destroyed, are increasing faster than bulk lower atmosphere. The cause appears more vigorous circulation, which models predict result climate change. If observed trends implied emissions continue, then change over 21st century will 27 % less those projected with fixed lifetime, impact on global warming ozone depletion proportionately lessened. Because caused part by N2O, this finding an example negative climate–chemistry feedback.

Attribution of observed changes in stratospheric ozone and temperature

Three recently-completed sets of simulations of multiple chemistry-climate models with greenhouse gases only, with all anthropogenic forcings, and with anthropogenic and natural forcings, allow the causes of observed stratospheric changes to be quantitatively assessed using detection and attribution techniques. The total column ozone response to halogenated ozone depleting substances and to nat...

Tropospheric ozone variations governed by changes in stratospheric circulation

Thedownward transport of stratospheric ozone is an important natural source of tropospheric ozone, particularly in the upper troposphere, where changes in ozone have their largest radiative e ect1. Stratospheric circulation is projected to intensify over the coming century, which could lead to an increase in the flux of ozone from the stratosphere to the troposphere2–4. However, large uncertain...

Causes and impacts of changes in the stratospheric meridional circulation in a chemistry-climate model

The climate of the stratosphere is known to be subject to long-term changes induced by anthropogenic emissions of long-lived greenhouse gases (GHGs) as well as by emissions of ozone depleting substances (primarily chlorofluorocarbons, CFCs). Enhanced concentrations of CFCs have led to strong ozone depletion over the last decades. Thanks to the Montreal Protocol and its amendments and adjustment...

Experiments with a Stratospheric General Circulation

The 18-level primitive equation, general circulation model described in Part I was used to study the diffusion of two idealized tracers in the stratosphere. One traccr was designed to simulate broadly the behavior of the radioactive tungsten which escaped lnto the stratosphere following nuclear tests in the Tropics, the other was taken as a photochemical ozone distribution. Both the meridional ...
